Notes for Virgil Eugene STONE
Graduated from Tonkawa High School, where he played football. Joined the Navy and served on the Kitty Hawk during World War II. After he was discharged, he returned to Tonkawa where he farmed.

Virgil was all state in football but had trouble memorizing the plays--so they would call the play and then describe what he was supposed to do.

Virgil was 12 when his dad died. He was a real handful for his mother. One story I remember was he would lock himself in the bathroom in their Tonkawa home and beat the bathtub with a leather strop and scream, “Mom you’re killing me.” His mother would stand outside the door yelling “I’m going to kill you when I get in there.”
