Death Record notes for Hannalou Estelle STEPHENSON
Mother passed last night about 7:30 pm. at St. Anthony's Hospital in OKC; services have not yet been scheduled.

This has been a challenging year for her. In April, while visiting David and family in Enid, she was hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia. They rearranged their schedules to stay with her 24/7 to minimize her confusion.

In June she had what appeared to be a rash on her inside right ankle but her dermatologist sent her to Integris Baptist wound care. They tried a variety of creams and treatments but it progressed to an open sore and then to four more lesions (which did eventually heal) with daily to weekly visits-depending on the treatment at the time. (She had vascular disease in her calves with minimal circulation.) The pain became such that her primary care doctor prescribed a patch the end of July--she was not taking the oral pain med on a sufficiently spaced timing. The patch did control the pain but impacted her dementia significantly. She began attending an adult day care 3Xweek a couple of weeks ago and the doctors were discussing other pain controls since she would be supervised most of the time now.

Last Friday I was unable to arouse her to get ready. The EMTs removed the patch and gave her an injection to counteract as they thought she had symptoms of overdose. She was still asleep in the critical care unit at noon when I left. That evening she was awake, alert and more cognizant than she had been in weeks! However, she had not had any of her regular meds since Thursday evening. I suggested she needed at least her dementia meds and quinine (for leg cramps). Saturday she was moved to the 8th floor and was very confused, distraught, angry etc. That evening Beckie and a friend, Patty, came, she finally received some meds and calmed somewhat. Sunday, she began passing blood and returned to a critical care unit. A bleeding ulcer was found and sealed but the lose of blood caused a heart attack. She became stable again with some improvement. Thursday evening she was moved to the 8th floor again. She ate about half of her supper but had not slept all day. I thought I would stay until she went to sleep--but she didn't. About 10 she had more difficulties and an x-ray showed fluid in her right lung. Though restrained, she kept trying to remove the oxygen mask so I stayed the night. She finally dozed about 8:30 Friday morning and I left.

Jerry and I returned about 7:00 pm; she had eaten some fish and pudding, was calmer but still had labored breathing. The doctor came about 7:20 and Mother was gone.

This may be more than you wanted to know but I wanted everyone to have the same info.

Mother loved her family and friends and greatly enjoyed the visits, phone calls, cards and pictures over the years.

Thank you for your love and prayers.
Judith
