Notes for Emil Peter Christain BACK
He made the “Cherokee Strip” land run from Orlando with his brother, Joe. He, with his brother, had a saloon in Guthrie while they were waiting for the date to be set for the land run. He took Claim #55 in Bunch Creek Township. near what is now Billings, Oklahoma. He died in 1897 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Brother Joe was appointed guardian of his children and he helped Georgia and the children to prove up the claim.

HNS Note
I have not checked this out in any way. The Family always said he died of Rabies. That he had been bitten while clearing his claim and a few weeks later became violent and with the help of neighbors, they took him to Guthrie. Since there was no cure for Rabies in that time, they had to put him in the asylum. He lived a short time.

In a conversation with Elizabeth, wife of a grandson, she said they found among Georgies papers a letter from the hospital at Guthrie which said Emil had cut his throat while shaving unattended. Said they could not locate Georgie at the time and buried him in the hospital cemetery.

There is also a letter from the Asylum:

Mr. P. G. Back
White Rock, Okla.

Dear Sir:
Your brother committed suicide this morning by cutting his throat with a razor. I have written his wife full particulars and you can see the letter. I enclose you the twenty-five cents you sent him a few days ago. We had done all we could for your brother but it was of no avail. He had attempted suicide a number of times. With dandiest regards, I am yours truly, John Threadgill, M. D., Superintendent. Oklahoma Hospital for the Insane, Norman, Okla.
