Robert Cates was Indian scout with army. Martha was over half indian born in 1871. Cates was from Missouri but served in Tennessee and met martha there. Had two children, the son's name was Richard. Cates went back to Swanich Missouri NW of Richmond. Cates Father may have been clergy. Martha went back to Missouri to find Robert Cates to see if he would make a home for them. He didn't want to.
When Martha went to Missouri, her younger child Richard was too young for the walk to Missouri from Tennessee so hee stayed with his Martha's father Wilson Gibbs. Nora never saw her little brother again. He was about two. Pat Jordan found him on a Tennessee census, maybe 1880 listed as a grandson.

Grandfather and one or two aunts raised Nora. She married John Russell Swafford who lived in Anthony Kansas. Thelma faye was born in Anthony. Thelma had 6 sisters and 1 brother.48
