Burns Were Fatal to Miner.
J.J. Miller, Bridegroom of Two Weeks, Died in Hospital.
Girard, March 16. John J. Miller, who was injured by the premature explosion of a shot in Central mine No. 48 Saturday, died in the Girard hospital Monday morning. His injuries were chiefly burns but they were extremely bad ones. Had he lived, he would have been blind. His face, arms, and body all caught the blast of the flames.
There are two explanations offered for the accident. Some believe Mr. Miller’s lamp set a bank of gas on fire as he was tamping in his shot and this ignited the shot. Others think a spark was struck from a particle of sulphur. He was hurled back 25 or 30 feet from the shot.
Mr. Miller was 24 years old and lived in Girard. He was married only two weeks before his death to Miss Lillian Davis of Fort Scott. He had come here from Oklahoma not long ago. Three brothers living there survive him. The funeral was held yesterday morning at the home of one of them, J. E. Miller. Rev. W. E. Babb of the Christian church officiated. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery at Pittsburg.
