John Henry Potter
Passed Away in St. Louis and is Brought Here for Burial
John Henry Potter, Jr. was born in Boonville February 3, 1897, and died at the Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis Saturday, June 8 at 10:15 p.m. where he was being treated for a severe injury which he sustained while at work at the Missouri Pacific Depot. When it became known that he was critically hurt, his father and mother joined his wife and brother at his bedside, where they nursed him for five weeks. He passed from this life, fully conscious to the end, bidding his wife and little, year-old babe farewell before sinking into that quiet sleep that knows no awakening, safe in Him who doeth all things for the best. The deceased was a promising young businessman of Boonville, having established a grocery store and restaurant near the M. K. & T. Depot during the past year. He was united in marriage with Miss Mabel Simms, of Marshall, Mo., on May 7, 1916, and shortly thereafter went to the Mexican border with the Boonville contingent of soldiers, but was exempted under the married men's ruling, and returned to Boonville. A daughter was born to the happy couple June 17, 1917.
Those who mourn his untimely end are his wife, Mabel Simms Potter, and the infant daughter, Ernestine Mabel; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Potter; three sisters, Mrs. C. McCartney, of Springfield, Mo., Miss Bessie, of Boonville, and Mrs. Jesse Burt, of Pratt, Kansas; six brothers, William and Herman, of Pacific, Walter, George, and Edward, of Boonville, and J. W. Stillwell, of Higginsville, Mo. The funeral took place from the Evangelical church, of which he was a faithful member, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock; Rev. Schlinkmann officiating, and he was laid to rest in the Walnut Grove cemetery under the auspices of the Woodmen of the World lodge, who read the ritual of the order at the grave, followed by a closing prayer by the Evangelical minister. John Henry Potter attended the age of 21 years, four months and five days, and was highly respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance as an exemplary young man. The Republican joins the host of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved.
